Surah Al-Mu’awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas)

The 113th (Surah Al-Falaq) and 114th (Surah An-Nas) surahs of the Holy Qur’an are known as the “Surah Al-Muawwidhatayn,” which means “protection and refuge from evil.”

These two Surahs are so closely related that they share the same name because their content is very similar. Together, these two surahs are very powerful, and they have been given the special name “Al-Muawwidhatayn,” meaning “the verses of refuge.”

These surahs were revealed as prayers for protection. Surah Al-Falaq focuses on seeking Allah’s protection from all forms of evil in creation. Surah An-Nas guides us to seek refuge in Allah from the harm caused by the schemes and plots of creation.

It is recommended to recite them three times each in the morning and evening to seek protection from all kinds of evil.

Let’s learn Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas (Al-Muawwidzatain):

Surah Al-Falaq Transliteration, English Translation

Surah Falaq is the 113th chapter of the Holy Quran and contains just 5 verses (ayats), making it simple to read and memorize.

Surah An-Naas Transliteration, English Translation

Surah An-Nas is the 114th and final chapter of the Holy Quran. With only 6 verses, it is one of the shortest surahs in the Holy Quran.

Hadith on Surah Falaq and Nas

Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

“The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) would seek refuge from the devils and the evil eye of mankind until the two chapters of refuge (surah al-falaq and surah an-nas) were revealed, so when they were revealed he took both of them and left everything else.”

(Sunan at-Tirmidhi)

Reciting Surah an Naas and Falaq Before Going To Bed

Narrated ‘Aisha:

“Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face, and front of his body. He used to do that three times.”

Imam Malik was told by Aisha (May Allah Be Pleased With Her) that if the Prophet of Allah was sick, he would recite the Mu’awwidhatayn on himself and blow (over himself).

If his agony grew unbearable, Aisha agreed to recite the Mu’awwidhatayn over him, take his palm, and wipe it over himself, asking the blessing of those Surahs.

This Hadith was reported by Al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud, An-Nasa’i, and Ibn Majah.

Uqbah ibn Amr Al-Juhani reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Allah has revealed verses the like of which you have never seen: Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of the people (Surah an-Nas) and: Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak (Surah al-Falaq)”
