Manners And Etiquettes of Reading The Holy Quran

The Holy Quran is the holiest and most sacred book in the world among the scriptures. This heavenly Manuscript was revealed upon the final Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in parts over 23 years. It stands out from all other books because it contains the words of the Almighty Allah and is a source of divine guidance for Muslims and non-Muslims. The Holy Quran manners are important. Unlike other books, the Holy Quran is unique, sublime, and perfect in every manner.

Since it is the words of Allah Almighty, it must be read and recited with proper manners and etiquette. Typically, elders know the manners and etiquette of reading the Holy Quran, but younger children must be taught how to read the Noble Quran with its proper etiquette.

You might notice that kids consider the holy Quran as other ordinary books. Therefore, they must be guided to read the holy Quran correctly and with the highest reverence. This blog lists some essential Quran reading etiquette/ manners for kids to follow while studying the Quran Kareem.

Sincerity & Clear Intentions

Before reciting the Holy Quran, the first and most crucial aspect is reading it with sincerity and a pure heart. It is a fundamental requirement for any deed to be approved by Allah (SWT).

You should only recite the Quran for the Lord’s reward and pleasure; do not do it for attention or material gain.

Observe Cleanliness and Wudu

One must maintain the condition of complete purity, both physical and mental, which is the prerequisite of every religious act. Cleaning up and performing Wudu are requirements before Quran reading.

Before reciting the Quran, perform ablution and have clean clothes and a clean body, as Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) refers to cleanliness as “Half of Faith.”

Place the Qur’an Above/ on a Pillow

It goes without saying that the Holy Book of Allah is very revered. Therefore, it is not advised to read it in your lap. And it should never be placed on the ground, as it is disrespectful, hence a sin.

The Quran should be placed on a tidy cushion. Another wonderful option to place it is a dedicated Quran-reading table.

Face the Qiblah Position

It is recommended to face the Qiblah (towards the direction of the Holy Kaaba) when reciting because that is the ideal setting. It falls within the manners of reading the Holy Quran, even if it is not required.

Leaning back or aside while reading the Quran is considered a disgraceful act towards the holy book. Therefore, Quran readers and reciters must sit straight and calm while reading the Quran Majeed.

Hold in the Right Hand

Always keep in mind that the book you are reading is not a typical book. The book of the Lord is the best in both heaven and earth.

As part of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Sunnah, you should hold the Holy Quran in your right hand with the highest love and reverence.

Before Reciting, read “Tauz” and “Tasmia”

It takes a lot of attention to recite the Holy Quran. The best method is to recite “Tauz” and “Tasmia,” two duas, before you recite, because Satan always tries to divert the reciter.

The Tauz is “Audhu Billahi mina-Shaitan-nir-Rajeem.” (I seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the Accursed.)

The Tasmia is “Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Rahim.” (In the name of God, most Gracious, most Compassionate.)

If you are reciting a Surah from the middle, start with “Tauz” only, and if you are reciting it from the beginning, recite both “Tauz” and “Tasmia.”

Recite in a Beautiful Tone

You should never forget that the Noble Qur’an is words of Allah while you recite it. You should read the Quran in a beautiful tone and a loud voice.

Be careful not to overdo it; you should not beautify your voice when reciting the Quran to the point of breaking Tajweed rules.

Similarly, you shouldn’t read the Quran in one go. Read the Quran word by word and slowly to help you understand and feel connected to what is being spoken.

Keep Tajweed Rules in Mind

Any pronunciation mistake could alter the meaning of Arabic because it is a highly complex language. The holy Quran must be recited with utmost care according to proper Tajweed rules and pronunciation.

Tajweed is the knowledge of the rules of recitation and using them when reciting the Quraan. It explains that every letter should have its proper position in its meaning. It includes instructions on how to pronounce Quranic/ Arabic letters and where to pause, stop, and extend pronunciation during recitation.

You can learn Tajweed rules and how to correctly read the Quran from an online Quran academy like Quran Focus Academy.

Prostrate (Do Sajdah) Before the Lord

The reader and listener need to prostrate (perform Sajdah) after reading 14 verses in the Quran.

It is farz upon both the reciter and the audience member to prostrate. They may perform Sajdah right after that blessed verse ends or at any moment afterward.

Do Not Talk While Reciting

While reciting the Qur’an, it’s crucial not to be distracted or engage in conversation. It is a disgrace to the Holy Book to pause its recitations for worldly talks.

You can finish a verse and stop reciting the book before talking to someone. Furthermore, when hearing Azaan’s voice, one must pause even the Quran recitation.

After Finishing, Place it in a Safe Place

Because someone can unintentionally step over the Koran, keeping it above and in a secure location is crucial. Children, pets, and others who don’t appreciate the value of it should not have access to it.

Bottom Line

In conclusion, these are some of the most important etiquettes and manners of reading the holy Quran to show the proper respect for it and understand it to its fullest. Remember all these points before and during the Holy Quran recitation.
